Adam Willaerts
Nederlandse marineschilder
Adam Willaerts was een schilder uit de Nederlandse Gouden Eeuw. Willaerts (soms ook Willarts of Willers) werd in Londen geboren aan Vlaamse ouders die om religieuze redenen uit Antwerpen waren gevlucht. In 1585 woonde het gezin in Leiden. Van 1597 tot zijn dood leefde en werkte Adam in Utrecht. Hij werd lid van de Utrechtse Sint-Lucasgilde in 1611 en werd vervolgens in 1620 haar deken. Zijn zonen Cornelis, Abraham en Isaac volgden hem op. Hij stond bekend als schilder van rivier- en kanaallandschappen, kustgezichten, vismarkten, optochten en genrestukken. Hij schilderde ook dorpen en zeeslagen. Zijn allegorie van de overwinning van de Nederlanden op de Spaanse vloot in Gibraltar bevindt zich in het Rijksmuseum.
