Akseli Gallen-Kallela
Identité finlandaise par l'art du Kalevala
Akseli Gallen-Kallela était un peintre finlandais surtout connu pour ses illustrations du Kalevala, l'épopée nationale finlandaise (illustration ci-dessous). Son œuvre est considérée comme très importante pour l'identité nationale finlandaise. Il a changé son nom de Gallén en Gallen-Kallela en 1907. Gallen-Kallela est né Axel Waldemar Gallén à Pori, en Finlande, dans une famille suédophone. Son père, Peter Gallén, travaillait comme chef de police et avocat. Gallen-Kallela a grandi à Tyrvää. À l'âge de 11 ans, il a été envoyé à Helsinki pour étudier dans un lycée classique, car son père s'opposait à son ambition de devenir peintre. Après la mort de son père en 1879, Gallen-Kallela a suivi des cours de dessin à la Société finlandaise des Beaux-Arts (1881–1884) et a étudié en privé sous la direction d'Adolf von Becker. En 1884, il s'installa à Paris pour étudier à l'Académie Julian. À Paris, il se lia d'amitié avec le peintre finlandais Albert Edelfelt, le peintre norvégien Carl Dørnberger et l'écrivain suédois August Strindberg. Pendant cette période, il voyagea entre la Finlande et Paris. Il épousa Mary Slöör en 1890. Le couple eut trois enfants : Impi Marjatta, Kirsti et Jorma. Lors de leur voyage de noces en Carélie orientale, Gallen-Kallela commença à collecter des matériaux pour ses représentations du Kalevala. Cette période se caractérise par des peintures romantiques inspirées du Kalevala, telles que le Mythe d'Aino, ainsi que par plusieurs paysages ; toutefois, dès 1894, l'influence du symbolisme était fortement visible dans ses œuvres.
