Akseli Gallen-Kallela
Identidade finlandesa pela arte do Kalevala
Akseli Gallen-Kallela foi um pintor finlandês conhecido principalmente por suas ilustrações do Kalevala, a epopeia nacional finlandesa (ilustração abaixo). Sua obra é considerada muito importante para a identidade nacional finlandesa. Ele mudou seu sobrenome de Gallén para Gallen-Kallela em 1907. Gallen-Kallela nasceu como Axel Waldemar Gallén em Pori, Finlândia, numa família de língua sueca. Seu pai, Peter Gallén, trabalhava como chefe de polícia e advogado. Gallen-Kallela cresceu em Tyrvää. Aos 11 anos, foi enviado para Helsínquia para estudar num liceu clássico, pois seu pai se opunha à sua ambição de se tornar pintor. Após a morte do pai em 1879, Gallen-Kallela frequentou aulas de desenho na Sociedade Finlandesa de Belas Artes (1881–1884) e estudou privadamente sob a orientação de Adolf von Becker. Em 1884, mudou-se para Paris para estudar na Académie Julian. Em Paris, tornou-se amigo do pintor finlandês Albert Edelfelt, do pintor norueguês Carl Dørnberger e do escritor sueco August Strindberg. Durante esse período, viajava entre a Finlândia e Paris. Casou-se com Mary Slöör em 1890. O casal teve três filhos: Impi Marjatta, Kirsti e Jorma. Durante a lua de mel na Carélia Oriental, Gallen-Kallela começou a recolher material para as suas representações do Kalevala. Este período é caracterizado por pinturas românticas sobre o Kalevala, como o Mito de Aino, e por várias paisagens; contudo, até 1894, a influência do simbolismo já era visivelmente forte nas suas obras.
