아서 럼리
남북전쟁 삽화의 선구자
아서 럼리는 아일랜드 더블린에서 태어나 1840년경 미국으로 건너와 브루클린에 거주했습니다. 1850년대에 그는 내셔널 아카데미 오브 디자인에서 미술을 공부했으며, 책과 새로 창간된 삽화 신문인 『뉴욕 일러스트레이티드』, 『하퍼스 위클리』, 『프랭크 레슬리스 일러스트레이티드 뉴스페이퍼』에 삽화를 그려 생계를 유지했습니다. 1861년 4월, 프랭크 레슬리는 럼리를 '특파 화가'로 워싱턴 D.C.에 파견하여 어윈 맥도웰 장군의 군대와 함께 남하해 버지니아주로 진군하게 했고, 그곳에서 불런 크릭에서 남부 연합군과 교전했다. 럼리는 연방군이 초기에 성공한 공격 장면의 대형 파노라마 스케치를 그렸으며, 뉴욕시 소방 조아브 부대의 총검 돌격 장면을 근접해서 세밀하게 묘사했다. 남부 연합의 증원군이 반격하여 연방군의 공세를 무너뜨렸을 때, 럼리는 워싱턴으로 후퇴하는 북군 사이에서 발생한 공황 상태를 생생하게 포착했다. 1862년, 그는 『뉴욕 일러스트레이티드』에서 일하기 시작했다. 전반적으로 『레슬리스』와 『뉴욕 일러스트레이티드』는 럼리의 전시 그림 298점을 게재했다. 또한 그는 미국 최초의 일간 삽화 신문으로 1870년대 초에 창간된 『데일리 그래픽』에도 사회 풍자 그림을 기고했다.
