Bartholomeus Johannes van Hove
Insegnò a molti, dipinse città romantiche
Bartholomeus Johannes van Hove fu un pittore olandese e il padre di Hubertus van Hove. Svolse un ruolo importante nello sviluppo della pittura del XIX secolo grazie ai suoi numerosi discepoli. Riuscì a trasmettere le sue abilità a un vasto gruppo di artisti, tra i quali spiccarono in particolare Johannes Bosboom e Jan Hendrik Weissenbruch. Van Hove fu allievo di suo padre, Hubertus van Hove il Vecchio, e del pittore teatrale JHAA Breckenheijmer, e fu nominato direttore nel 1820 all'Accademia Teeken dell'Aia. In tale veste divenne l'insegnante di Carel Jacobus Behr, Petrus Augustus Beretta, Pieter Gerardus Bernhard, Johannes Bosboom, Cornelis de Cocq, Johannes Josephus Destree, Lambertus Hardenberg, suo figlio Huib van Hove, Johannes van Hove, Herman Gijsbert Keppel Hesselink, Everhardus Koster, Charles Leickert, Maurits Leon, Ferdinand Carl Sierich, Johannes Anthonie Balthasar Stroebel, Willem Troost, Petrus Gerardus Vertin, Salomon Verveer, Lodewijk Anthony Vintcent, Hendricus Stephanus Johannes van Weerden, Jan Hendrik Weissenbruch, Cornelis Westerbeek e Salomon van Witsen. Nel 1823 fu incaricato dal Dipartimento della Guerra di illustrare la varietà delle uniformi dell'esercito olandese in una serie di disegni a penna. Van Hove era anche un artista decorativo e nel 1829 succedette al suo insegnante JHAA Breckenheijmer come pittore di scenografie al Teatro dell'Aia. Nel mondo della pittura dell'Aia era una figura pubblica e nel 1847 fu uno dei fondatori del Pulchri Studio. Divenne anche il primo presidente di questo gruppo, carica che ricoprì fino al 1851. Fu inoltre membro di Arti et Amicitiae, con sede ad Amsterdam, di cui divenne presidente onorario nel 1874. Ad eccezione delle scenografie teatrali, Van Hove dipinse principalmente paesaggi urbani e interni di chiese in uno stile romantico. Le sue prime opere sono caratterizzate da uno stile pittorico fine e dettagliato, che contrasta fortemente con le ampie e colorate scenografie teatrali. I suoi paesaggi urbani e gli interni delle chiese erano spesso decorati con figure, talvolta realizzate dal figlio Huib. I suoi paesaggi urbani successivi presentano toni più sciolti e morbidi, con una colorazione grigia personalizzata.
