Battista Franco
Pintor manierista, grabador original
Battista Franco Veneziano, también conocido por su nombre correcto de Giovanni Battista Franco, fue un pintor y grabador al aguafuerte manierista italiano activo en Roma, Urbino y Venecia a mediados del siglo XVI. También es conocido como il Semolei o simplemente Battista Franco. Nativo de Venecia, llegó a Roma en sus veintes. Pintó una alegoría de la Batalla de Montemurlo, actualmente en el Palacio Pitti (1537), y un fresco del Prendimiento de Juan el Bautista para el Oratorio de San Giovanni Decollato (1541). Entre 1545 y 1551 pintó en Urbino. Es posible que fuera, junto con Girolamo Genga, uno de los mentores de Federico Barocci. Su pintura, de estilo manierista, estaba fuertemente influenciada por Miguel Ángel; sin embargo, sus dibujos y aguafuertes poseen mucha más vitalidad y originalidad. Regresó a Venecia, donde ayudó a pintar al fresco el techo de la Biblioteca Marciana. Realizó una serie de paneles, incluido un Bautismo de Cristo (capilla Barbaro), para los muros y la bóveda de la capilla Grimani en la iglesia de San Francesco della Vigna en Venecia. También pintó la Resurrección de Lázaro en el Palacio Ducal.
