Battista Franco
Maniëristisch schilder, origineel etser
Battista Franco Veneziano, ook bekend onder zijn eigenlijke naam Giovanni Battista Franco, was een Italiaanse maniëristische schilder en etser die halverwege de 16e eeuw actief was in Rome, Urbino en Venetië. Hij staat ook bekend als il Semolei of gewoon als Battista Franco. Hij was afkomstig uit Venetië en kwam in zijn twintiger jaren naar Rome. Hij schilderde een allegorie van de Slag bij Montemurlo, nu te zien in het Palazzo Pitti (1537), en een fresco van de Gevangenneming van Johannes de Doper voor het Oratorium van San Giovanni Decollato (1541). Van 1545 tot 1551 was hij als schilder actief in Urbino. Mogelijk was hij, samen met Girolamo Genga, een van de mentoren van Federico Barocci. Zijn schilderkunst, in maniëristische stijl, was sterk schatplichtig aan Michelangelo; maar zijn tekeningen en etsen getuigen van veel meer levendigheid en originaliteit. Na zijn terugkeer in Venetië hielp hij mee aan de beschildering van het plafond van de Biblioteca Marciana met fresco's. Voor de muren en het gewelf van de Grimani-kapel in de kerk San Francesco della Vigna in Venetië vervaardigde hij een reeks panelen, waaronder een Doop van Christus (Barbaro-kapel). In het Dogepaleis schilderde hij de Opwekking van Lazarus.
