Battista Franco
Pintor maneirista, gravador original
Battista Franco Veneziano, também conhecido pelo seu nome correto de Giovanni Battista Franco, foi um pintor e gravador em água-forte maneirista italiano ativo em Roma, Urbino e Veneza em meados do século XVI. Ele também é conhecido como il Semolei ou simplesmente Battista Franco. Natural de Veneza, chegou a Roma aos vinte anos. Pintou uma alegoria da Batalha de Montemurlo, hoje no Palácio Pitti (1537), e um afresco da Prisão de João Batista para o Oratório de San Giovanni Decollato (1541). De 1545 a 1551, pintou em Urbino. Pode ter sido, juntamente com Girolamo Genga, um dos mentores de Federico Barocci. Sua pintura, no estilo maneirista, foi fortemente influenciada por Michelangelo; mas seus desenhos e gravuras em água-forte têm muito mais vivacidade e originalidade. Retornou a Veneza, onde ajudou a pintar a fresco o teto da Biblioteca Marciana. Pintou uma série de painéis, incluindo um Batismo de Cristo (capela Barbaro), para as paredes e abóbada da capela Grimani na igreja de San Francesco della Vigna, em Veneza. Pintou a Ressurreição de Lázaro no Palácio Ducal.
