Benjamin Gerritsz. Cuyp

Benjamin Gerritszoon Cuyp è stato un pittore paesaggista del Secolo d'oro olandese. Cuyp nacque e morì a Dordrecht. Secondo Houbraken, fu allievo di suo zio, Jacob Gerritsz Cuyp, che lo istruì insieme a suo figlio (cugino di Benjamin) Aelbert Cuyp. Houbraken riteneva che Aelbert avesse tratti più nitidi, mentre Benjamin mostrava l'approccio rozzo del suo maestro. Secondo l'RKD, Houbraken si sbagliava sulla famiglia, e Benjamin e Jacob nacquero entrambi a Dordrecht come figli di un pittore su vetro di Venlo di nome Gerrit Gerritsz Cuyp. Benjamin imparò a dipingere dal suo fratellastro maggiore, Jacob Gerritsz Cuyp. Era quindi lo zio, non il cugino, del molto più famoso Aelbert Cuyp. È noto per pezzi allegorici, opere di genere, scene di spiaggia, scene militari e paesaggi. Influenzò Barent van Kalraet, e fu seguito da Maerten Fransz van der Hulst.
