카날레토
베네치아 풍경화의 대가
조반니 안토니오 카날은 일반적으로 카날레토로 알려져 있으며, 베네치아 공화국 출신의 이탈리아 화가로 18세기 베네치아 학파의 중요한 구성원으로 간주된다. 그는 베네치아, 로마, 런던의 도시 풍경(베두타)을 그리는 화가였을 뿐만 아니라 상상의 풍경(카프리치라고 함)도 그렸으나, 그의 작품에서 현실과 상상의 경계는 결코 명확하지 않다. 그는 또한 에칭 기법을 사용한 중요한 판화가이기도 했다. 1746년부터 1756년까지 그는 영국에서 활동하며 런던과 워릭 성, 알닉 성을 비롯한 많은 장소의 풍경을 그렸다. 그는 영국 상인이자 감식가인 조지프 "콘술" 스미스의 도움으로 영국에서 크게 성공했으며, 스미스가 소장한 카날레토 작품의 방대한 컬렉션은 1762년 조지 3세에게 판매되었다.
