Carlo Carlone
Schilder van Duitse paleisfresco's
Carlo Innocenzo Carlone, of Carloni, was een Italiaanse schilder en graveur, voornamelijk actief in Duitsland. Hij was afkomstig uit Scaria, nabij Como in Lombardije, maar zou ook uit de Genuese schildersfamilie Carloni kunnen stammen. Hij was de zoon van een beeldhouwer, maar gaf de voorkeur aan schilderkunst en werd onder de hoede van Giulio Quaglio geplaatst. Vervolgens kreeg hij ook opleiding bij Giovanni Battista Colomba. Daarna studeerde hij in Venetië en Rome, tot zijn 23e jaar onder Francesco Trevisani, waarna hij naar Duitsland reisde, waar hij olieverfschilderijen en fresco's naliet in Ludwigsburg, Passau, Linz, Breslau, Praag en Wenen. Hij schilderde grote decoratieve frescocyclus voor paleizen in Wenen, Praag en Zuid-Duitsland. Carlone staat bijvoorbeeld bekend om het schilderen van de plafondafbeeldingen in het Upper Belvedere van het paleizencomplex Belvedere. Zijn De verheerlijking van de heiligen Felix en Adauctus (1759–1761) werd in opdracht gemaakt voor de koepel van de kerk van San Felice del Benaco aan het Gardameer. Hij stierf in Como.
