查尔斯·德西穆斯·巴罗
新西兰水彩先驱兼药剂师
查尔斯·德西默斯·巴罗是新西兰的药剂师和艺术家。作为威廉·弗朗西斯·巴罗与其妻子索菲亚·赫尔的第十个有记录的孩子，查尔斯于1822年5月9日出生在英格兰萨里郡的坎伯韦尔。 他携家人移居新西兰，于1849年8月抵达惠灵顿。他的妻子是法官亨利·塞缪尔·查普曼的表亲，正是查普曼鼓励了这次移民，并在他们抵达时借给巴拉德一家一间小屋，他们在此居住直到自己的房屋建成。 巴罗很快在兰姆顿码头开设了一家药店。与此同时，他很快以艺术家的身份获得认可，当时被视为"热情的业余爱好者"，主要创作水彩画。1850年，他为亨利·威廉·佩特雷的孩子们作画，但前来拜访的夏洛特·戈德利希望为她的儿子亚瑟绘制肖像，却对他的才华嗤之以鼻： 这里有一位化学家，最近转行成了艺术家，还画了几幅肖像，虽然很像，但画得很糟糕……如果效果可能还算过得去，我倒是很想请他为亚瑟画像，但我担心结果只会令人失望。 1849年3月17日，巴罗在南安普敦的圣劳伦斯教堂与莎拉·玛丽亚·斯泰尔结婚。这段婚姻共育有六名儿子和三名女儿。
