Christiaan Julius Lodewijk Portman
Pittore, insegnante e pioniere del dagherrotipo
L'artista olandese Christiaan Julius Lodewijk Portman era figlio di Lodewijk Gottlieb Portman (1772-1813), un incisore che possedeva un negozio di forniture d'arte, che Portman e suo fratello alla fine ereditarono e gestirono. C.J.L. Portman studiò arte con suo padre, nonché con Cornelis Kruseman e J.W. Pieneman. C.J.L. Portman fu pittore di ritratti, dipinti di genere e storici, e dopo aver vinto un premio alla Rijksakademie di Amsterdam nel 1825, vi insegnò infine. Tra i suoi studenti vi erano artisti come Petrus Franciscus Greive e Jean Francois Michel Mourot. Portman fu anche membro fondatore di Arti et Amicitiae, una società di artisti olandesi fondata nel 1839, e suo segretario dal 1840 al 1842. Il Rijksmuseum di Amsterdam e il Museo Teylers di Haarlem sono i principali depositari delle sue opere pittoriche. Il suo dipinto più famoso, La morte di Willem Barents, 20 giugno 1597, del 1836, è attualmente in prestito al National Maritime Museum di Londra. Portman fu probabilmente il primo artista olandese a sperimentare ed esporre dagherrotipi. Fotografò vedute urbane a Parigi, Amsterdam e L'Aia, ed espose diversi dagherrotipi all'Aia nel 1839 insieme a un dipinto storico. Lasciò Amsterdam nei primi anni Quaranta dell'Ottocento, vivendo ad Alkmaar e Beverwijk nel nord dei Paesi Bassi, nonché a Kleve in Germania, prima di trasferirsi a Parigi nella metà degli anni Cinquanta.
