Claude Gillot
Pionier van feestelijke taferelen
Claude Gillot was een Franse schilder, prentmaker en illustrator, het best bekend als de meester van Watteau en Lancret. Gillot werd geboren in Langres. Hij was schilder, graveur, boekillustrator, metaalbewerker en theaterontwerper. Watteau was tussen 1703 en 1708 zijn leerling. Gillots levendige mythologische landschapsstukken, met titels als Het feest van Pan en Het feest van Bacchus, openden in 1715 de deuren van de Academie voor Schilderkunst in Parijs voor hem; vervolgens paste hij zijn kunst aan aan de modieuze smaak van die tijd en introduceerde hij de decoratieve fêtes champêtres, waarin hij later door zijn leerlingen werd overtroffen. Hij was ook nauw verbonden met de opera en het theater als ontwerper van decors en kostuums. Hij stierf in Parijs, op 49-jarige leeftijd.
