Domenico Gargiulo
Pintor barroco napolitano de paisajes
Domenico Gargiulo, llamado Micco Spadaro, fue un pintor italiano del período barroco, principalmente activo en Nápoles y conocido por sus paisajes, escenas de género y pinturas históricas. Domenico Gargiulo era hijo de un fabricante de espadas, lo que le valió el apodo de 'Micco Spadaro' ('spadaro' significa 'fabricante de espadas'). Fue entrenado en el taller del pintor de batallas Aniello Falcone, donde fue contemporáneo de Andrea di Leone y Salvator Rosa. También trabajó con Viviano Codazzi, a cuyas pinturas arquitectónicas añadió figuras. Sus primeras obras estuvieron influenciadas por Paul Bril, cuyos trabajos debió conocer a través de los frescos paisajísticos de 1602 en el atrio de Santa María Regina Coeli en Nápoles. También fue influenciado por Filippo Napoletano. Entre sus alumnos estaban Pietro Pesce e Ignazio Oliva. Fue patrocinado por coleccionistas como Gaspar Roomer. También trabajó en la Certosa di San Martino, donde pintó en el Coro dei Conversi y el Quarto del priori. Pintó una representación de la insurrección de Masaniello y de la peste de 1656.
