La Donaldson Lithographing Company a débuté comme une petite entreprise de lithographie basée à Cincinnati, dans l'Ohio (10 août 1863). William M. Donaldson et Henry Elms ont fondé l'entreprise en tant qu'associés jusqu'au décès d'Elms en 1872. Après la mort d'Elms, Donaldson est resté seul à la tête de l'entreprise. En 1883, Donaldson a officiellement constitué l'entreprise sous le nom de Donaldson Lithograph Company. L'entreprise a prospéré après son déménagement à Newport, dans le Kentucky, en 1898. Donaldson a ajouté un autre site à Covington, dans le Kentucky, spécialisé dans la création d'enseignes artistiques. William Donaldson est décédé le 22 octobre 1931. Il avait 91 ans. L'entreprise est restée dans la famille jusqu'en 1981.
