Elizabeth Gould
Pionera en litografía ornitológica
Elizabeth Gould, de soltera Coxen, fue una artista e ilustradora británica, casada con el naturalista y autor John Gould. Realizó numerosas ilustraciones y litografías para obras ornitológicas, incluidas las láminas en la obra de Darwin «La zoología del viaje del H.M.S. Beagle» y la obra fundamental de los Gould «Las aves de Australia». Elizabeth nació el 18 de julio de 1804 en Ramsgate, Inglaterra, en una familia militar. Es probable que recibiera formación en dibujo y botánica desde temprana edad, como era habitual en las mujeres de su clase en la Inglaterra victoriana. Conoció a John Gould a través de su hermano, Charles Coxen, quien también era taxidermista. Se casó con John Gould en enero de 1829, ambos tenían 24 años. Elizabeth inició su vida profesional elaborando dibujos ornitológicos destinados a complementar los escritos ornitológicos de John en cartas dirigidas a colegas. John la animó a aprender litografía y pidió a su colaborador Edward Lear que se la enseñara. El alcance de la influencia directa de Lear sobre la artista es incierto, pero ambos formaban parte de un círculo de artistas e historiadores naturales que trabajaban en publicaciones similares. Todos los miembros de este grupo estaban entusiasmados con la representación y la ilustración científica de los animales desconocidos hallados en las expediciones europeas, especialmente con las novedades en las colecciones inglesas de aves y mamíferos australianos. Una vez que dominó esta forma artística, creó ilustraciones a partir de los dibujos más rudimentarios de John. Diseñó, litografió y pintó más de 650 láminas.
