Ford Madox Brown fue un pintor británico de temas morales e históricos, notable por su versión distintivamente gráfica y a menudo hogarthiana del estilo prerrafaelita. Posiblemente, su pintura más notable fue Work (1852–1865). Brown pasó los últimos años de su vida pintando las doce obras conocidas como The Manchester Murals, que representan la historia de Mánchester, para el Ayuntamiento de Mánchester. Brown era el nieto del teórico médico John Brown, fundador del sistema brunoniano de medicina. Su bisabuelo era un trabajador escocés. Su padre, Ford Brown, sirvió como pagador en la Royal Navy, incluyendo un período bajo el mando de Sir Isaac Coffin y otro a bordo del HMS Arethusa. Dejó la Armada tras el final de las Guerras Napoleónicas. En 1818, Ford Brown se casó con Caroline Madox, de una antigua familia de Kent. Los padres de Brown tenían recursos financieros limitados y se mudaron a Calais en busca de alojamiento más barato, donde su hija Elizabeth Coffin nació en 1819 y su hijo Ford Madox Brown en 1821. La educación de Brown fue limitada, ya que la familia se mudaba con frecuencia entre alojamientos en el Pas-de-Calais y parientes en Kent, pero mostró talento artístico al copiar grabados de antiguos maestros. Su padre inicialmente buscó una carrera naval para su hijo, escribiendo a su antiguo capitán Sir Isaac Coffin. La familia se trasladó a Brujas en 1835 para que Brown pudiera estudiar en la academia bajo Albert Gregorius. Brown se mudó a Gante en 1836 para continuar sus estudios bajo Pieter van Hanselaere. Se trasladó a Amberes en 1837 para estudiar bajo Gustaf Wappers. Continuó estudiando en Amberes después de la muerte de su madre en 1839. Su hermana falleció en 1840, y luego su padre en 1842.
