Ford Madox Brown
Peintre préraphaélite graphique et moral
Ford Madox Brown était un peintre britannique de sujets moraux et historiques, remarquable pour sa version distinctement graphique et souvent hogarthienne du style préraphaélite. Son tableau le plus notable est sans doute Work (1852–1865). Brown passa les dernières années de sa vie à peindre les douze œuvres connues sous le nom de The Manchester Murals, dépeignant l'histoire de Manchester, pour la mairie de Manchester. Brown était le petit-fils du théoricien médical John Brown, fondateur du système brunonien de médecine. Son arrière-grand-père était un ouvrier écossais. Son père, Ford Brown, a servi comme intendant dans la Royal Navy, notamment sous les ordres de Sir Isaac Coffin et à bord du HMS Arethusa. Il a quitté la marine après la fin des guerres napoléoniennes. En 1818, Ford Brown épousa Caroline Madox, issue d'une ancienne famille du Kent. Les parents de Brown disposaient de ressources financières limitées et déménagèrent à Calais pour trouver un logement moins cher, où leur fille Elizabeth Coffin naquit en 1819 et leur fils Ford Madox Brown en 1821. L'éducation de Brown était limitée, car la famille déménageait fréquemment entre des logements dans le Pas-de-Calais et des proches dans le Kent, mais il a montré un talent artistique en copiant des gravures d'anciens maîtres. Son père souhaitait initialement une carrière navale pour son fils et écrivit à son ancien capitaine, Sir Isaac Coffin. La famille s'installa à Bruges en 1835 afin que Brown puisse étudier à l'académie sous Albert Gregorius. Brown déménagea à Gand en 1836 pour poursuivre ses études sous Pieter van Hanselaere. Il s'installa à Anvers en 1837 pour étudier sous Gustaf Wappers. Il continua ses études à Anvers après la mort de sa mère en 1839. Sa sœur mourut en 1840, puis son père en 1842.
