Ford Madox Brown

Ford Madox Brown era un pittore britannico di soggetti morali e storici, noto per la sua versione distintamente grafica e spesso hogarthiana dello stile preraffaellita. Probabilmente, il suo dipinto più notevole fu Work (1852–1865). Brown trascorse gli ultimi anni della sua vita dipingendo le dodici opere note come The Manchester Murals, raffiguranti la storia di Manchester, per il Municipio di Manchester. Brown era il nipote del teorico medico John Brown, fondatore del sistema brunoniano di medicina. Il suo bisnonno era un lavoratore scozzese. Suo padre Ford Brown servì come intendente nella Royal Navy, incluso un periodo al servizio di Sir Isaac Coffin e un periodo sulla HMS Arethusa. Lasciò la Marina dopo la fine delle guerre napoleoniche. Nel 1818, Ford Brown sposò Caroline Madox, di un'antica famiglia del Kent. I genitori di Brown avevano risorse finanziarie limitate e si trasferirono a Calais per cercare alloggi più economici, dove la loro figlia Elizabeth Coffin nacque nel 1819 e il loro figlio Ford Madox Brown nel 1821. L'istruzione di Brown fu limitata, poiché la famiglia si spostava frequentemente tra alloggi nel Pas-de-Calais e parenti nel Kent, ma egli mostrò talento artistico nella copia di stampe di antichi maestri. Suo padre inizialmente cercò una carriera navale per suo figlio, scrivendo al suo ex capitano Sir Isaac Coffin. La famiglia si trasferì a Bruges nel 1835 affinché Brown potesse studiare all'accademia sotto Albert Gregorius. Brown si trasferì a Gand nel 1836 per continuare i suoi studi sotto Pieter van Hanselaere. Si trasferì ad Anversa nel 1837 per studiare sotto Gustaf Wappers. Continuò a studiare ad Anversa dopo la morte della madre nel 1839. Sua sorella morì nel 1840, e poi suo padre nel 1842.
