図形的な前ラファエル派の画家
フォード・マドックス・ブラウンは、道徳的および歴史的主題を扱うイギリスの画家で、独特なグラフィック的かつしばしばホガース風のプレラファエル派スタイルで知られる。おそらく彼の最も有名な絵画は『仕事』(1852–1865)である。ブラウンは晩年、マンチェスター市庁舎のために、マンチェスターの歴史を描いた『マンチェスター壁画』として知られる12点の作品を制作した。 ブラウンは、ブルーノニアン医学体系の創設者である医学理論家ジョン・ブラウンの孫でした。彼の曽祖父はスコットランドの労働者でした。父のフォード・ブラウンはイギリス海軍で会計係を務め、アイザック・コフィン卿の下での勤務やHMSアレトゥーサでの勤務期間もありました。彼はナポレオン戦争終結後に海軍を離れました。 1818年、フォード・ブラウンはケントの古い家系出身のキャロライン・マドックスと結婚した。ブラウンの両親は経済的に余裕がなく、より安価な住居を求めてカレーに移り住み、1819年に娘のエリザベス・コフィンが、1821年に息子のフォード・マドックス・ブラウンがそこで生まれた。 ブラウンの教育は限定的だった。家族がパ=ド=カレーの住居とケントの親戚の間を頻繁に移動していたためであるが、彼は古い巨匠の版画を模写することで芸術的才能を示した。父は当初息子に海軍の道を歩ませようと考え、元船長のアイザック・コフィン卿に手紙を書いた。1835年、家族はブラウンがアルベール・グレゴリウスのもとでアカデミーで学べるようブルージュに移った。1836年、ブラウンはピーター・ファン・ハンセラールのもとで学ぶためにヘントに移った。1837年には、グスタフ・ワッペルスのもとで学ぶためにアントウェルペンに移った。1839年に母が亡くなった後も、彼はアントウェルペンでの学びを続けた。妹は1840年に亡くなり、父は1842年に亡くなった。
