奧地利畫家弗朗茨·理查德·翁特貝格是一位擅長水景、風景、建築和風俗畫的浪漫主義風格畫家，於1838年8月15日出生在當時的奧匈帝國因斯布魯克，是一個富裕資產階級家庭的十一個孩子之一。他在相對年輕的年齡決定追求藝術家的職業生涯，並進入慕尼黑學院學習。在這裡，他師從學院教授兼風景畫家阿爾伯特·齊默爾曼（1808-1888）和朱利葉斯·蘭格（1817-1878）。 Unterberger 最初是以阿爾卑斯風景畫家的身份獲得認可，其作品尤其以他的故鄉蒂羅爾為背景。1860年，Unterberger 繼續在杜塞道夫深造；在這一尤為重要的時期，他深受風景畫家奧斯瓦爾德·阿申巴赫（1827-1905）及其弟弟安德烈亞斯（1815-1910）作品的影響。安德烈亞斯也是一位風景畫家，在19世紀70年代移居義大利之前，曾在斯堪地那維亞地區廣泛創作。
