Fritz Winold Reiss était un lithographe, illustrateur, artiste graphique et peintre allemand. Reiss a étudié à l'Académie des beaux-arts de Düsseldorf sous la direction de Karl Müller et Heinrich Lauenstein. Il a ensuite travaillé dans l'entreprise lithographique de son père à Düsseldorf jusqu'en 1878. De 1878 à 1882, il a vécu à Stuttgart, puis à Lahr (1882 à 1886), Karlsruhe (1886 à 1888), Leipzig (1888 à 1892), puis de nouveau à Stuttgart, et enfin de 1899 à 1908 à Fribourg-en-Brisgau, au 70 Zasiusstraße. Reiss was a member of the artists' association "Breisgauer Fünfer", founded in 1899, whose chairman was Hermann Dischler. He had lived in Kirchzarten since 1908, where he joined the painters of the so-called Gutach artists' colony. In his drawings, watercolors and paintings, he captured the country, the people and the customs of the Black Forest in a narrative and humorous way, not without social criticism. He illustrated numerous magazines, novels and books, including picture books for children and youth literature, and designed postcards and ceramics. Le peintre germano-américain Winold Reiss était son deuxième fils.
