Gabriel de Saint-Aubin
Chronist des Pariser Straßenlebens
Gabriel de Saint-Aubin, auch bekannt als Gabriel Jacques de Saint-Aubin, war ein französischer Zeichner, Druckgrafiker und Maler. Seine Brüder Charles Germain de Saint Aubin und Augustin de Saint-Aubin waren ebenfalls Künstler, genauso wie seine Nichte Marie-François, Tochter von Charles. Er war Schüler von Étienne Jeaurat und Hyacinthe Collin de Vermont. Nach drei Fehlversuchen, den Prix de Rome von 1752 bis 1754 zu gewinnen, verließ er die Akademie der Schönen Künste und trat der Gilde des Heiligen Lukas bei. Ein charakteristisches Merkmal von Saint-Aubins Kunst ist seine übermäßige Neigung zur Beobachtung der Gesellschaft in den Straßen der Hauptstadt, die er bei seinen Wanderungen zeichnete. Seine Stiche, Radierungen und großen Aquarelle sind daher ein wertvolles Dokument des pariser Künstlerlebens im 18. Jahrhundert.
