Gaspar Van Wittel

Caspar van Wittel ou Gaspar van Wittel, connu en italien sous le nom de Gaspare Vanvitelli ou Gasparo degli Occhiali, était un peintre et dessinateur néerlandais qui a eu une longue carrière à Rome. Il a joué un rôle central dans le développement du genre de la peinture topographique connu sous le nom de veduta. On lui attribue le mérite d'avoir transformé la topographie en une spécialité picturale au sein de l'art italien. Van Wittel est né dans une famille catholique romaine à Amersfoort. Son père était fabricant de charrettes. Caspar a étudié la peinture à Amersfoort auprès du relativement obscur Thomas Jansz van Veenendaal pendant quatre ou cinq ans, puis auprès du plus connu Matthias Withoos pendant sept ans. Ses premières œuvres conservées ont été réalisées à Hoorn en 1672, où il s'était réfugié après l'invasion et l'occupation françaises d'Amersfoort pendant l'Année désastreuse. Il retourna à Amersfoort, où il fut actif jusqu'en 1674, année durant laquelle il partit pour l'Italie avec son ami Jacob van Staverden, un autre élève de Withoos. Comme son ancien professeur Withoos, il a rejoint les Bentvueghels, une association principalement composée d'artistes néerlandais et flamands travaillant à Rome. Son surnom dans les Bentveughels était « Piktoors » (Torche de poix) ou « Toorts van Amersfoort » (Torche d'Amersfoort). Il était également surnommé ‘Gasparo dagli Occhiali’ (Gaspare aux lunettes). Il a travaillé à Rome avec le peintre flamand Abraham Genoels et pourrait même avoir été son élève. Parmi ses autres collaborateurs figurait Hendrik Frans van Lint, qui deviendra l'un des principaux peintres de vedute dans la première moitié du XVIIIe siècle. En 1697, van Wittel épousa Anna Lorenzani. Son premier fils, Luigi, naquit en 1700. Luigi devint un architecte célèbre et utilisa le nom de famille italianisé Vanvitelli. Un second fils naquit en 1702. Van Wittel a passé presque toute sa vie en Italie, où il est arrivé en 1674 et est mort en 1736. Il a vécu principalement à Rome mais, particulièrement entre 1694 et 1710, il a également parcouru le pays et peint à Florence, Bologne, Ferrare, Venise, Milan, Plaisance, Urbino et Naples. Il est devenu membre de l'Accademia di San Luca à Rome en 1711. Il a réalisé sa dernière œuvre datée en 1730.
