George Moutard Woodward
Caricaturiste anglais prolifique et original
George Murgatroyd Woodward, plus communément connu sous le nom de George 'Moutard' (« Moutarde ») Woodward, était un caricaturiste et un auteur humoristique anglais. Il était un ami et un compagnon de beuverie de Thomas Rowlandson. Woodward est né à Stanton Hall, à Stanton by Dale dans le Derbyshire, en Angleterre, fils de William Woodward en 1765. Surnommé Mustard George, Woodward avait un style quelque peu brut mais énergique. Publié largement dans « The Caricature Magazine » et ailleurs, ses dessins ont été presque tous gravés par d'autres, principalement Thomas Rowlandson, mais aussi Charles Williams, Isaac Cruikshank, Piercy Roberts et d'autres. Dorothy George a écrit de lui : « Il occupe une place très considérable dans la caricature ; il était original, prolifique et varié. ». Les archives George Woodward au bureau des archives du Derbyshire à Matlock, dans le Derbyshire, possèdent une grande collection de ses œuvres. Beaucoup de ses estampes sont décrites dans le Catalogue of Political and Personal Satires Preserved in the Department of Prints and Drawings in the British Museum.
