Gerrit Adriaensz. Berckheyde
Maestro de vistas urbanas holandesas
Gerrit Adriaenszoon Berckheyde fue un pintor del Siglo de Oro neerlandés, activo en Haarlem, Ámsterdam y La Haya, conocido hoy principalmente por sus paisajes urbanos. Berckheyde nació y murió en Haarlem. Bautizado el 6 de junio de 1638 siendo aún lactante, fue hermano menor (once años más joven) y discípulo del pintor Job Adriaenszoon Berckheyde. El historiador del Siglo de Oro neerlandés Arnold Houbraken afirmó que Job había sido formado como encuadernador por su padre, pero que no pudo averiguar quién le enseñó a pintar. Gerrit, a su vez, aprendió de su hermano mayor. El maestro de Job debió ser un artista de Haarlem; algunos sostienen que fue Frans Hals, pero Houbraken aseguró que viajó como oficial entre Leiden y Utrecht, ofreciendo sus servicios como retratista y aprendiendo mediante la práctica. Durante la década de 1650, los dos hermanos realizaron un extenso viaje por el Rin hacia Alemania, haciendo escalas en Colonia, Bonn, Mannheim y finalmente Heidelberg. Los hermanos trabajaron en Heidelberg para Carlos I Luis, elector palatino, donde ambos fueron galardonados con una medalla de oro por sus esfuerzos, pero finalmente no lograron adaptarse a la vida cortesana y regresaron a Haarlem, donde compartieron casa y estudio. Gerrit se convirtió en miembro del gremio de San Lucas de Haarlem el 27 de julio de 1660. Le siguió el pintor Adriaen Oudendijck.
