Gerrit Adriaensz. Berckheyde
Maître des vues urbaines néerlandaises
Gerrit Adriaenszoon Berckheyde était un peintre du siècle d'or néerlandais, actif à Haarlem, Amsterdam et La Haye, aujourd'hui surtout connu pour ses vues urbaines. Berckheyde est né et mort à Haarlem. Baptisé le 6 juin 1638 alors qu’il était encore nourrisson, il était le frère cadet (de onze ans) et l’élève du peintre Job Adriaenszoon Berckheyde. L’historien de l’Âge d’or Arnold Houbraken affirmait que Job avait été formé comme relieur par son père, mais qu’il n’avait pu découvrir qui lui avait enseigné la peinture. Gerrit apprit à son tour auprès de son frère aîné. Le maître de Job devait être un artiste de Haarlem ; certains avancent qu’il s’agissait de Frans Hals, mais Houbraken soutenait qu’il avait voyagé comme compagnon entre Leyde et Utrecht, offrant ses services de portraitiste et apprenant son art par la pratique. Dans les années 1650, les deux frères entreprirent un long voyage le long du Rhin vers l'Allemagne, s'arrêtant à Cologne, Bonn, Mannheim et enfin Heidelberg. Les frères travaillèrent à Heidelberg pour Charles Ier Louis, électeur palatin, où ils reçurent tous deux une médaille d'or pour leurs efforts, mais ne parvinrent finalement pas à s'adapter à la vie de cour et retournèrent à Haarlem, où ils partagèrent une maison et un atelier. Gerrit devint membre de la guilde de Saint-Luc de Haarlem le 27 juillet 1660. Il fut suivi par le peintre Adriaen Oudendijck.
