Gerrit Adriaensz. Berckheyde
Maestro delle vedute urbane olandesi
Gerrit Adriaenszoon Berckheyde fu un pittore del Secolo d'oro olandese, attivo ad Haarlem, Amsterdam e L'Aia, oggi noto soprattutto per le sue vedute cittadine. Berckheyde nacque e morì ad Haarlem. Battezzato il 6 giugno 1638 quando era ancora in fasce, era il fratello minore (di undici anni) e allievo del pittore Job Adriaenszoon Berckheyde. Lo storico dell'Età d'oro olandese Arnold Houbraken affermò che Job era stato formato come rilegatore dal padre, ma che non era riuscito a scoprire chi gli avesse insegnato a dipingere. Gerrit, a sua volta, imparò dal fratello maggiore. Il maestro di Job doveva essere un artista di Haarlem; alcuni sostengono che fosse Frans Hals, ma Houbraken riferì che aveva viaggiato come garzone tra Leida e Utrecht, offrendo i propri servizi come ritrattista e imparando attraverso la pratica. Negli anni Cinquanta del Seicento, i due fratelli intrapresero un lungo viaggio lungo il Reno verso la Germania, facendo tappa a Colonia, Bonn, Mannheim e infine Heidelberg. I fratelli lavorarono a Heidelberg per Carlo I Luigi, elettore palatino, dove entrambi furono insigniti di una medaglia d'oro per i loro sforzi, ma alla fine non riuscirono ad adattarsi alla vita di corte e tornarono ad Haarlem, dove condivisero una casa e uno studio. Gerrit divenne membro della Gilda di San Luca di Haarlem il 27 luglio 1660. Fu seguito dal pittore Adriaen Oudendijck.
