Gerrit Adriaenszoon Berckheyde foi um pintor do Século de Ouro Neerlandês, ativo em Haarlem, Amsterdã e Haia, hoje mais conhecido por suas paisagens urbanas. Berckheyde nasceu e faleceu em Haarlem. Batizado em 6 de junho de 1638 ainda bebê, era irmão mais novo (onze anos mais jovem) e aluno do pintor Job Adriaenszoon Berckheyde. O historiador da Era de Ouro holandesa Arnold Houbraken afirmou que Job havia sido treinado como encadernador pelo pai, mas que não conseguiu descobrir quem lhe ensinou a pintar. Gerrit, por sua vez, aprendeu com o irmão mais velho. O mestre de Job deve ter sido um artista de Haarlem; alguns afirmam que foi Frans Hals, mas Houbraken sustentou que ele viajou como oficial entre Leiden e Utrecht, oferecendo seus serviços como retratista e aprendendo através da prática. Durante a década de 1650, os dois irmãos fizeram uma longa viagem ao longo do Reno até a Alemanha, parando em Colônia, Bonn, Mannheim e finalmente Heidelberg. Os irmãos trabalharam em Heidelberg para Carlos I Luís, Eleitor Palatino, onde ambos foram agraciados com uma medalha de ouro por seus esforços, mas acabaram não conseguindo se adaptar à vida na corte e retornaram a Haarlem, onde dividiram uma casa e um ateliê. Gerrit tornou-se membro da Guilda de São Lucas de Haarlem em 27 de julho de 1660. Ele foi seguido pelo pintor Adriaen Oudendijck.
