Estilo sienés onírico con formas alargadas
Giovanni di Paolo di Grazia fue un pintor italiano que trabajó principalmente en Siena, convirtiéndose en un prolífico pintor e ilustrador de manuscritos, incluidos los textos de Dante. Fue uno de los pintores más importantes de la escuela sienesa del siglo XV. Sus primeras obras muestran la influencia de maestros sieneses anteriores, pero su estilo posterior fue más personal, caracterizado por colores fríos y duros, así como por formas alargadas. Su estilo también recibió la influencia de artistas del gótico internacional como Gentile da Fabriano. Muchas de sus obras poseen una atmósfera onírica poco común, como el cuadro surrealista El milagro de san Nicolás de Tolentino, pintado hacia 1455 y conservado actualmente en el Museo de Arte de Filadelfia, mientras que sus últimas obras, en particular El Juicio Final, el Cielo y el Infierno, de alrededor de 1465, y La Asunción, pintada en 1475, ambas en la Pinacoteca Nacional de Siena, abordan sus elevados temas con un tratamiento grotesco. La reputación de Giovanni decayó tras su muerte, pero fue reivindicada en el siglo XX.
