Style siennois onirique aux formes allongées
Giovanni di Paolo di Grazia était un peintre italien qui travailla principalement à Sienne, devenant un peintre prolifique et un enlumineur de manuscrits, illustrant notamment les textes de Dante. Il fut l'un des peintres les plus importants de l'école siennoise du XVe siècle. Ses premières œuvres témoignent de l'influence des maîtres siennois antérieurs, mais son style ultérieur devint plus personnel, se caractérisant par des couleurs froides et dures ainsi que par des formes allongées. Son style subit également l'influence d'artistes du gothique international tels que Gentile da Fabriano. Beaucoup de ses œuvres possèdent une atmosphère onirique singulière, à l'image du tableau surréaliste Le Miracle de saint Nicolas de Tolentino, peint vers 1455 et aujourd'hui conservé au Philadelphia Museum of Art, tandis que ses dernières œuvres, notamment Le Jugement dernier, le Paradis et l'Enfer datant d'environ 1465 et L'Assomption peinte en 1475, toutes deux conservées à la Pinacothèque nationale de Sienne, traitent de manière grotesque leurs sujets élevés. La réputation de Giovanni déclina après sa mort avant d'être ravivée au XXe siècle.
