Estilo sienês onírico com formas alongadas
Giovanni di Paolo di Grazia foi um pintor italiano que trabalhou principalmente em Siena, tornando-se um prolífico pintor e ilustrador de manuscritos, incluindo os textos de Dante. Foi um dos mais importantes pintores da escola sienesa do século XV. Suas primeiras obras revelam a influência de mestres sieneses anteriores, mas seu estilo posterior tornou-se mais individual, caracterizando-se por cores frias e duras e por formas alongadas. Seu estilo também assimilou a influência de artistas do gótico internacional, como Gentile da Fabriano. Muitas de suas obras possuem uma atmosfera onírica incomum, como o quadro surrealista O Milagre de São Nicolau de Tolentino, pintado por volta de 1455 e hoje abrigado no Museu de Arte da Filadélfia, enquanto suas últimas obras, particularmente O Juízo Final, o Céu e o Inferno, de cerca de 1465, e A Assunção, pintada em 1475, ambas na Pinacoteca Nazionale de Siena, apresentam tratamentos grotescos de seus temas sublimes. A reputação de Giovanni declinou após sua morte, mas foi revivida no século XX.
