Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo

Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo était un peintre et graveur italien spécialisé dans l’eau-forte. Il était le fils de l’artiste Giovanni Battista Tiepolo et le frère aîné de Lorenzo Baldissera Tiepolo. Domenico est né à Venise, a étudié sous la direction de son père et, à l’âge de 13 ans, était son assistant principal. Il était l’un des nombreux assistants, dont Lorenzo, qui transposaient les conceptions de son père (exécutées dans l’« esquisse à l’huile » inventée par ce dernier). À l’âge de 20 ans, il produisait ses propres œuvres pour des commanditaires. Il a assisté son père à Wurtzbourg de 1751 à 1753, décorant la célèbre fresque de l’escalier, à Vicence à la Villa Valmarana en 1757, et à Madrid au palais de Charles III de 1762 à 1770. Son style pictural s’est développé après la mort de son père en 1770, époque à laquelle il est retourné à Venise, où il a travaillé ainsi qu’à Gênes et Padoue. Bien que sa peinture conserve l’influence décorative de son père, elle s’est éloignée de ses fantaisies spatiales pour adopter une représentation plus réaliste. Ses portraits et ses scènes de la vie vénitienne se caractérisent par le mouvement, la couleur et une composition délibérée.
