Gustave Vanaise
Flämischer Historienmaler, Gründer der Zwanzig
In Gent geboren, wo er unterrichtet wurde, bevor er seine Ausbildung in Brüssel abschloss, wurde Vanaise 1883 eines der Gründungsmitglieder der Gruppe Les Vingt. Beeinflusst von der flämischen und später der niederländischen Kunst nach einem Besuch in den Niederlanden Anfang 1878, aber auch von Zeitgenossen wie Jan Van Beers, zog Vanaise im August 1878 nach Paris. Er verbrachte dort zwei Jahre und malte seine ersten großen Historienbilder, die er im Salon auszustellen begann.
