Hendrick ter Brugghen
Audace tenebrismo e realismo sociale
Hendrick ter Brugghen fu un pittore olandese di scene di genere e soggetti religiosi. Fu uno dei membri di spicco dei seguaci olandesi di Caravaggio, i cosiddetti caravaggisti di Utrecht. Insieme a Gerrit van Honthorst e Dirck van Baburen, Ter Brugghen fu uno dei più importanti pittori olandesi influenzati da Caravaggio. I suoi dipinti erano caratterizzati da un'audace tecnica del chiaroscuro – il contrasto creato da superfici chiare e luminose accostate a zone cupe e scure – ma anche dal realismo sociale dei soggetti, talvolta affascinanti, talvolta scioccanti o addirittura volgari.
