Henry John Stock estudou nas escolas da Royal Academy e expôs na Academia e noutros locais durante muitos anos. Parece ter ganhado a vida pintando retratos, embora o seu verdadeiro interesse residisse em temas imaginativos expressos num estilo que sugere a influência de William Blake e G. F. Watts. É possível que tenha sentido uma especial identificação com Blake. Tal como Blake, nasceu em Soho e viveu mais tarde em Felpham, em Sussex, onde Blake passou os anos de 1800 a 1803 sob o patrocínio de William Hayley.
