Henry Peters Gray était un peintre américain de portraits et de scènes de genre. Né à New York, il fut l'élève de Daniel Huntington à New York, puis étudia à Rome et à Florence. Élu membre de la National Academy of Design en 1842, il succéda à Huntington à la présidence en 1870, occupant ce poste jusqu'en 1871. Les dernières années de sa vie furent consacrées au travail du portrait. Il fut fortement influencé par les anciens maîtres italiens, peignant avec des couleurs douces et une tendance classique. L'une de ses toiles notables était une composition allégorique intitulée « La Naissance de notre drapeau » (1875). Il mourut à New York. Les Amants grecs a été peint par Gray après un voyage en Italie, où il a été grandement influencé par l'art de la Renaissance italienne. Cette peinture a été très bien accueillie à son époque et reflète la fascination du XIXe siècle pour l'antiquité gréco-romaine. The Pride of the Village was based on Washington Irving’s story of the same name and is about a beautiful and simple country girl, the proverbial "pride of the village," who fell in love with an army officer. When the officer is transferred to another post, he asks that she accompany him, however, her pure mind was so upset by this indecorous suggestion that she pined away, surrounded by her devoted family. The painting shows her in her decline, possibly “thinking of her faithless lover?—or were her thoughts wandering to that distant churchyard, into whose bosom she might soon be gathered?”
