Henry Peters Gray è stato un pittore americano di ritratti e di genere. Nato a New York, fu allievo di Daniel Huntington a New York e successivamente studiò a Roma e Firenze. Eletto membro della National Academy of Design nel 1842, succedette a Huntington alla presidenza nel 1870, ricoprendo la carica fino al 1871. Gli ultimi anni della sua vita furono dedicati al lavoro di ritrattistica. Fu fortemente influenzato dagli antichi maestri italiani, dipingendo con colori morbidi e una tendenza classica. Una delle sue tele più note fu una composizione allegorica intitolata «La nascita della nostra bandiera» (1875). Morì a New York. Gli amanti greci fu dipinto da Gray dopo un viaggio in Italia, dove fu profondamente influenzato dall'arte del Rinascimento italiano. Questo dipinto fu molto ben accolto ai suoi tempi e riflette il fascino del XIX secolo per l'antichità greco-romana. The Pride of the Village was based on Washington Irving’s story of the same name and is about a beautiful and simple country girl, the proverbial "pride of the village," who fell in love with an army officer. When the officer is transferred to another post, he asks that she accompany him, however, her pure mind was so upset by this indecorous suggestion that she pined away, surrounded by her devoted family. The painting shows her in her decline, possibly “thinking of her faithless lover?—or were her thoughts wandering to that distant churchyard, into whose bosom she might soon be gathered?”
