Jacob Gerritszoon Cuyp (scritto anche Cuijp) è stato un pittore di ritratti e paesaggi, noto soprattutto per i suoi ritratti. Nacque e morì a Dordrecht, ed era il figlio del designer di vetrate Gerrit Gerritsz Cuyp, che si trasferì a Dordrecht da Venlo. Era il fratellastro di Benjamin Gerritsz Cuyp e il padre del molto più famoso Aelbert Cuyp. Inizialmente dipinse nature morte, interni con figure e animali, ma in seguito si specializzò nei paesaggi pastorali per i quali è famoso. Secondo Houbraken, nel 1642 aiutò i pittori Jacques de Claeuw, Isaac van Hasselt e Cornelis Tegelberg a fondare una Gilda di San Luca a Dordrecht. Secondo lo RKD, fu allievo di Abraham Bloemaert a Utrecht e divenne membro della Gilda di San Luca di Dordrecht il 18 luglio 1617. Fu tesoriere nel 1629, 1633, 1637 e 1641. In seguito divenne il maestro dei pittori Ferdinand Bol, Rafaël Govertsz Camphuysen, Aelbert Cuyp, Benjamin Gerritsz Cuyp, Hendrik Dethier, Isaac van Duynen, Bastiaan Govertsz van der Leeuw, Paulus Lesire, Aert van der Neer, Pieter Hermansz Verelst e Ary Huybertsz Verveer.
