Jakob Christoph Miville
Romantische landschappen van uitgestrekte natuur
Geboren in Basel was Jakob Christoph Miville een veelgereisd schilder en tekenaar. Een verblijf in Rome en reizen door de Alpen beïnvloedden zijn vroege heroïsche landschappen. Maar pas tijdens zijn verblijf in Rusland (1809–1817) ontwikkelde hij zijn onderscheidende gevoel voor natuur: de uitgestrekte gebieden en landschappen die hij op de Krim en in de Kaukasus tegenkwam, inspireerden zijn evolutie tot een romantische landschapskunstenaar. Hij keerde terug naar zijn geboortestad met een uitgebreide collectie schetsen en studies, die dienden als basis voor de schilderijen die hij in Zwitserland bleef produceren.
