雅各布·馬蒂亞斯·施穆策
紅粉筆表情肖像研究大師
雅各布·馬蒂亞斯·施穆策爾最初在維也納接受訓練，後來在巴黎師從約翰·格奧爾格·維勒。使用紅粉筆（又稱棕色鉛筆）的繪畫技法很可能是施穆策爾直接從維勒那裡繼承而來的。後者與比他年長八歲的讓-巴蒂斯特·格勒茲是朋友，而格勒茲反過來可能啟發了施穆策爾創作這一類型的畫作。這些由施穆策爾大量創作的畫作與其說是真正的肖像畫，不如說是表情研究，這種類型是在法國根據夏爾·勒布倫及其1698年出版的理論著作《關於一般表情與特殊表情的演講》所教授的。這種嚴謹的繪畫技法讓人聯想到銅版雕刻的方法論——施穆策爾早年曾在維也納接受過銅版雕刻師的培訓。
