Jan Chełmiński

Jan Chełmiński, ook bekend als Jan van Chelminski, geboren als Jan Władysław Chełmiński, was een Poolse schilder. Chełmiński trad op 14 april 1875 toe tot de Academie voor Schone Kunsten in München (register: 3144) en werkte in heel Europa. Vanaf 1895 woonde hij in New York, hoewel hij in 1893 het Britse staatsburgerschap had verkregen. Hij trouwde tweemaal. Na zijn scheiding van zijn eerste vrouw, Marie Henschel (1858–?), trouwde hij met Leonie Knoedler, de zus van Roland Knoedler, van het beroemde New Yorkse kunsthandelshuis Knoedler. Chełmiński was tijdens zijn leven vooral bekend om zijn historische werken, met name die welke zich bezighielden met militaire geschiedenis en de Napoleontische oorlogen.
