Jan Hendrik Verheijen est né le 22 décembre dans la ville néerlandaise d'Utrecht, au sein d'une famille de marchands. Vers 1820, il a tourné son attention vers la peinture des scènes de rue d'Utrecht, des œuvres qui sont devenues indissociables de son nom. Peignant avec une grande attention aux détails tout en maintenant ses tableaux à des prix abordables, il a réussi à conquérir un marché auparavant dominé par des maîtres tels que Gerrit Adriaensz et Jan Van der Heyden.
