Jan Hendrik Verheijen nacque il 22 dicembre nella città olandese di Utrecht, da una famiglia di mercanti. Intorno al 1820 rivolse la sua attenzione alla pittura delle scene di strada di Utrecht, opere che divennero sinonimo del suo nome. Dipingendo con grande attenzione ai dettagli, ma mantenendo allo stesso tempo i suoi dipinti accessibili, riuscì a conquistare un mercato precedentemente dominato da maestri come Gerrit Adriaensz e Jan Van der Heyden.
