Jan Pieter Veth était un peintre, poète, critique d'art et maître de conférences universitaire néerlandais. Il est particulièrement reconnu en tant que peintre de portraits. Parmi ses modèles figuraient Max Liebermann, Lambertus Zijl, Frank van der Goes, Antoon Derkinderen et d'autres contemporains, dont divers collègues peintres. Jan Veth était le fils de Gerradus Huibert Veth, un marchand de fer et homme politique libéral de Dordrecht, et d'Anna Cornelia Giltay. Par sa mère, il descendait de la famille de peintres van Strij de Dordrecht (sa mère était une petite-fille de Jacob van Strij). Il épousa Anna Dorothea Dirks le 10 août 1888, union dont naquirent cinq enfants. Veth received his art education at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam. He was living in the area, called de Pijp. With several of his fellow students he founded the St. Luke group. From 1885 he worked with the painter Anton Mauve in Laren. After his marriage he settled in Bussum. In addition he was a well-known poet, belonging to The Movement of 1880 and publishing work in the De Nieuwe Gids. He designed the cover for "De Kleine Johannes", a book written by his friend, Frederik van Eeden, contributing to the development of book-art in the Netherlands. He was involved in the founding of "Genootschap Amstelodamum" and "Vereniging Hendrick de Keyser". As Professor Extraordinary in History of Art and Aesthetics (1906), he was associated with the Rijksakademie voor Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam. Veth était membre de l'Académie royale néerlandaise des arts et des sciences depuis 1923. En 1923, il est retourné à Amsterdam et a vécu au 327 Keizersgracht. Veth est décédé dans un hôpital.
