Jane Elizabeth Giraud

Jane Elizabeth Giraud wurde 1810 als Tochter von John Thomas Giraud geboren, der von hugenottischen Einwanderern abstammte und Chirurg sowie Bürgermeister von Faversham wurde. Janes Großvater war Pfarrer von St. Catherine und Rektor der Grammatikschule gewesen. Ihr jüngerer Bruder Francis folgte den Fußstapfen seines Vaters und wurde Chirurg, während ihr Bruder Herbert Professor für Chemie, Materia Medica und Botanik in Bombay wurde. Wie viele junge Frauen ihres Alters wandte sie sich der Blumenmalerei als Zeitvertreib zu und war außerordentlich erfolgreich, indem sie nicht weniger als drei illustrierte Bücher veröffentlichte. Das erste, mit dem Titel The Flowers of Shakspeare, illustrierte die zahlreichen botanischen Anspielungen in Shakespeares Stücken und erschien 1845. Es folgte 1846 The Flowers of Milton, das Paradise Lost und Paradise Regain'd illustrierte, und schließlich 1850 The Floral Months.
