Jane Elizabeth Giraud

Jane Elizabeth Giraud nació en 1810, hija de John Thomas Giraud, descendiente de inmigrantes hugonotes, quien se convirtió en cirujano y alcalde de Faversham. El abuelo de Jane había sido rector de St. Catherine y director de la escuela de gramática. Su hermano menor Francis siguió los pasos de su padre y se convirtió en cirujano, mientras que su hermano Herbert se convirtió en profesor de química, materia médica y botánica en Bombay. Como muchas jóvenes de su edad, se dedicó a la pintura de flores como pasatiempo y logró un éxito notable, publicando nada menos que tres libros ilustrados. El primero, titulado The Flowers of Shakspeare, ilustraba las numerosas referencias botánicas en las obras de Shakespeare y apareció en 1845. Le siguió en 1846 The Flowers of Milton, que ilustraba Paradise Lost y Paradise Regain'd, y finalmente The Floral Months en 1850.
