Jane Elizabeth Giraud

Jane Elizabeth Giraud nasceu em 1810, filha de John Thomas Giraud, descendente de imigrantes huguenotes, que se tornou cirurgião e prefeito de Faversham. O avô de Jane havia sido reitor de St. Catherine e diretor da escola de gramática. Seu irmão mais novo, Francis, seguiu os passos do pai e tornou-se cirurgião, enquanto seu irmão Herbert tornou-se professor de química, matéria médica e botânica em Bombaim. Como muitas jovens de sua idade, ela adotou a pintura de flores como passatempo e obteve um sucesso notável, publicando nada menos que três livros ilustrados. O primeiro, intitulado The Flowers of Shakspeare, ilustrava as numerosas referências botânicas nas peças de Shakespeare e foi publicado em 1845. Foi seguido em 1846 por The Flowers of Milton, que ilustrava Paradise Lost e Paradise Regain'd, e finalmente por The Floral Months, de 1850.
