簡·伊麗莎白·吉羅
開創文學植物插畫
簡·伊莉莎白·吉羅於1810年出生，是約翰·湯瑪斯·吉羅的女兒。約翰·湯瑪斯·吉羅源自胡格諾派移民後裔，後來成為法弗舍姆的外科醫生和市長。簡的祖父曾擔任聖凱瑟琳教堂的教區牧師以及文法學校的校長。她的弟弟弗朗西斯追隨父親的腳步，成為一名外科醫生；她的兄弟赫伯特則在孟買擔任化學、藥物學和植物學教授。 像許多同齡的年輕女性一樣，她將花卉繪畫作為消遣，並取得了顯著的成功，出版了至少三本插圖著作。第一本名為《莎士比亞之花》，於1845年出版，闡釋了莎士比亞戲劇中的眾多植物學典故。隨後在1846年出版了《彌爾頓之花》，為《失樂園》和《復樂園》配圖，最後則是1850年的《花之月》。
